Dear John    By Aaron Carter

I am the girl who has forgotten,

what it was like to be kissed.

You trump words as if our conversation

is a game of cards,

always on someone else’s side; never mine.

Romance is a glass of wine

you drink by yourself,

while I have slept to often alone in our bed,

with your dreams at the  bottom of a bottle.

You use to stand beside me,

instead of been a stain sat in a chair.

Your last packet of cigarettes,

constantly reborn from the ashes

would choke the life out of a phoenix.

Your ethics are a battery caged

eating chicken, turning butts

flicked onto the ground.

Got the ass end of you,

the only view you want of me.

ii

Takes me back to a river

we slept alongside ,

in a tight embrace, when we woke

I made scrambled eggs of it all

said, “I love you.”

Like a frying pan sliding down the wall

you paused,

thought, what have you got yourself into,

repeated those three simple syllables.

The mere sound of them, use to perk me up

like an espresso

now, they taste like instant coffee.

Have grown older, see you more clearly

broken backed, stuck in a mouse trap

you set yourself in every day.

Neither of us had a crystal ball

nonetheless, spun the world around

in the palms of our hands

down to four walls of a house.

In our separate rooms taking turns in the kitchen

conversations start with, “what’s for dinner.”

Anything but eggs.
